There are many agencies, and they all promise growth. Some deliver it; some mainly deliver contracts. The good news: you can tell the difference before you sign, if you know what to look for.
Green flags
- Transparent numbers. You get access to your figures, not just a screenshot when you ask.
- A clear contract. Term, revenue share, notice period and what is included are written down in plain words.
- You keep ownership. Your accounts, your email addresses and your content stay yours.
- Respect for boundaries. The agency asks what you do not want to do, and writes it down.
- A real contact person. You know who you are talking to, and that person knows you.
- Realistic expectations. Nobody can honestly promise you a fixed income, and a good agency does not try.
Red flags
- Guaranteed earnings or results "within two weeks".
- Pressure to sign quickly, before you could read the contract properly.
- Requests to change the email address or ownership details of your accounts.
- Long lock-in periods with high exit fees.
- No access to your own numbers.
- Pushing you towards content you have said you do not want to make.
Questions to ask in your first call
- Who writes with my fans, and how do you learn my voice and my rules?
- How and how often do you report numbers to me?
- How exactly is your share calculated, and what does it include?
- What happens if I want to stop working together?
- Who owns the accounts and the content during and after our collaboration?
- What do you do when my content is leaked?
Pay attention not only to the answers, but to how they are given. Clear, calm answers are a good sign. Vague promises and time pressure are not.
