Pay-per-view explained: how PPV messages work

Subscriptions are only one part of what fans pay for. On many creator platforms, a large share of earnings comes from pay-per-view: content that fans unlock individually. Here is how it works, and what makes it feel right instead of pushy.

What PPV is

Pay-per-view, or PPV, is content a fan pays for once to unlock. It is usually sent as a message with attached photos or videos, or published as a locked post on your page. The fan sees a preview or a short description, and the full content opens after the purchase.

How a PPV message works

  1. You prepare the content and decide what is included.
  2. You set a price and write a short message that explains what the fan will get.
  3. The fan sees a locked preview and decides whether to unlock it.
  4. After the purchase, the content is available to that fan in the chat.

PPV can go to a single fan or, as a mass message, to many fans at once. Personal messages usually feel more valuable; mass messages save time but should still be relevant to the people who receive them.

Pricing without guesswork

  • Price the value, not the effort. Exclusivity, length and how personal the content is matter more than how long it took to make.
  • Stay consistent. Similar content at very different prices confuses fans and erodes trust.
  • Offer steps. A smaller first purchase makes the next one easier.
  • Test and look at the numbers. Which offers get unlocked, at what time and at which price?

Why the conversation matters more than the price

PPV works best when it fits naturally into a conversation: a fan asks about your last shoot, and you offer to show them how it turned out. The same content sent out of nowhere often goes unopened. That is why good chatting is not about selling all the time, but about knowing your fans and offering the right thing at the right moment.

Common mistakes

  • Sending so many PPV messages that fans start ignoring them.
  • Previews or descriptions that promise something the content does not deliver.
  • Forgetting fans after they have bought something.
  • Selling content that goes beyond your own boundaries because a fan keeps pushing.
Our approach: at Molniya, PPV follows the conversation and the rules you set. You decide what is for sale, and your dashboard shows what works.
